Self check-in has become a standard on Airbnb. Guests want to arrive at the time of their choosing without depending on anyone. Here is everything you need to know.

Why switch to self check-in?

In Brussels, most guests arrive by plane or train. Arrival times are unpredictable. Without self check-in, you have to be available 24/7 or pay someone to welcome guests in your place. With a self-service solution, guests pick up the keys on their own — and you sleep soundly.

The 3 main solutions

1. Key lockbox with code (the simplest)

A secure box attached to the door or stair railing. The guest enters a code to retrieve the keys. Cost: €20–50. Installation: 2 minutes. Ideal for getting started, less secure over the long term.

2. Smart lock (the most recommended)

The lock opens with a temporary code or an app. Several models exist: Nuki, August, Yale. Cost: €150–350. Advantage: you control access remotely, no physical key, unique codes for each guest.

3. Smart padlock (for shared areas)

An in-between solution if you cannot change the lock. A Bluetooth or code-based padlock is installed on an interior door. Cost: €60–120.

Our recommendation: the Nuki lock

What the law says in Brussels

There is no specific legal requirement regarding the type of lock for short-term rentals. However, the property must be fitted with a secure locking system (a reinforced door or 3-point lock is recommended). Smoke detectors remain mandatory in every room.
